Caribbean Community (CARICOM)

Comore dettaglio

The Caribbean Community consists of an archipelago of 12 islands in the Caribbean Sea and three countries on the South and Central American mainland, with an overall population of just under 17 million. The following countries are participating in the CARICOM Exhibition located in the Islands, Sea and Food Cluster:

  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Suriname

The Community’s objective has been developed from the needs of its population, including the goal to provide physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet dietary needs and promote active and healthy lifestyles. This goal can only be achieved through the development of sustainable systems of food production. The sustainability of the Region’s food production has been negatively affected by several major factors including, but not limited to, natural disasters, climate change, decreasing land and labor availability, erosion of trade preferences and the ever increasing cost of imports.

The theme of Expo Milano, “Feeding the Planet – Energy for Life,” is at the heart of what CARICOM wants to achieve for its population. CARICOM’s participation is contributing to Expo Milano’s theme of, “Feeding the Planet – Energy for Life,” by showing that there needs to be:
  • Increased productivity, efficiency and sustainability of food production
  • Greater investment in rural agriculture areas
  • Provision of more incentives for food production
  • Increased access to arable land
  • Better infrastructure and water management
  • Reduce praedial larceny (theft of agriculture produce)
The CARICOM Community features thematic itineraries where visitors can experience through the senses of taste, smell, feel, touch and sound and sight, the varied economic, agricultural, social and cultural infrastructures of the region. Video presentations, product displays, food sampling and a variety of activities all provide the guests an exhilarating experience of visiting the Caribbean region and, in particular, these eight Countries.
