Basilicata - On the waterways: Basilicata land of Mefitis

Expo e territori scheda Basilicata

Basilicata is a land rich in water resources. From the ancient water collection system of Matera to the rammed earth dam of Monte Cotugno – the largest in Europe – and the five rivers of the immense hydro-mineral basin of Mt. Vulture, this blue gold is crucial for the development of the Lucania area. It gives support to local productive activities, incoming tourism and plays an essential role in regional produce. Along the waterways we discover archaeological sites, rich natural ecosystems, sustainable uses and practices, and ingenious technical skills, all seasoned with the flavours of the area.

SPECIAL ITINERARIES FORMING PART OF THE INITIATIVE
Along the waterways, along the Ionian coast and on the cross route from the Tyrrhenian to Mt. Vulture, the six paths lead the visitor to the discovery of the area. Nature, culture, food and wine, events and marvellous works of hydraulic engineering. The stops along the itineraries encompass the main sites of the region: the Sassi of Matera, national parks, museums and archaeological sites, ancient thermal baths and aqueducts, temples of Magna Grecia, Frederic's castles, natural and artificial lakes and marine coastal sites. Along the course of the rivers from source to mouth, a geolocation system gives access to maps that lead directly to local producers and restaurants offering cuisine based on quality local produce.
