The pool, 90 metres in diameter, is surrounded by stepped terraces, affording seating for up to 3,000 people, with a standing room behind them for another 17,000 spectators. The design of the exposition site is keyed on the ancient Roman urban planning ideal: two intersecting axes, the Decumano and the Cardo. In our present-day version, the east-west Decumano accommodates the international pavilions, while on the north-south Cardo we find the Italian exhibition buildings.
