Andrea Illy

Andrea Illy is Chairman and CEO of illycaffè S.p.A., a family company established in Trieste in 1933 with a mission to produce a coffee of excellence. After gaining a degree in Chemistry, he began his professional career in Switzerland and entered the family company in 1990 as a quality supervisor.  Following studies in Japan, he developed a Total Quality programme and in 1994 was appointed CEO. Since 1999 he has served as honorary President of A.S.I.C. (Association for the Science and Information on Coffee), the international scientific association which promotes research and dissemination of knowledge in the world of coffee. Thanks to the company vision and its focus on sustainability, in 2011  illycaffè became the first company in the world to be awarded certification  by DNV Business Assurance for its Responsible Supply Chain Process, presented during the Rio + 20 summit. In 2012 Andrea Illy was appointed Chairperson of the Promotion and Market Development Committee of the International Coffee Organization, a UN intergovernmental agency whose responsibility is to develop coffee consumption worldwide through the promotion of its positive values. In 2012 he also became a member of the think-tank LH Forum, the Movement for a Positive Economy set up by Jacques Attali. In 2013, Andrea Illy was appointed Chairman of the Fondazione Altagamma and to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Italy, for its Trieste branch. He was awarded the 2013  Capo d’Orlando Prize for Science and Industry  for the enlightened and innovative management of his company, combining sophisticated research activity with original marketing and product enhancement policies, which have established the brand as a symbol  of “Made in Italy” worldwide. In that same year, illycaffè was included in the Ethisphere Institute list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. Illy was one of the World Economic Forum Mentors in 2013. Andrea Illy is one of the Ambassadors for Expo Milano 2015.
 
 
On the legacy the Universal Exhibition will leave to Milan and Italy, Andrea Illy has stated: “This major event is an opportunity for our country to take a leading role on the world stage as far as nutrition, food and their fusion with art and creativity are concerned”.
